John Thorn: Dirt An Existential SongbooK

Why are we here? What’s this all for? World renowned songsmith John Thorn begins his latest collection DIRT with these questions and explores the meaning of life, the future of humanity and even attempts an answer or two.

Following in the footsteps of Tom Lehrer, Mose Allison, Tom Waits and Randy Newman, Thorn combines sublime piano playing, smoky baritone vocals, hard swinging grooves, wry lyrics and addictively catchy melodies in a masterful display of timeless songwriting that will have the audience simultaneously tapping along and inwardly seeking answers to life’s eternal questions.

DIRT displays John’s mastery of genres including jazz, blues, country, gospel and New Orleans funk.

Along with his solo shows John is one of Australia’s leading music theatre composers and well known internationally as one of the world’s premier musical improv accompanists (Spontaneous Broadway, Jason Kravits) and as musical director to the stars of cabaret (Meow Meow, Bob Downe, Barb Jungr, Caroline Nin). His most recent show was described by Barry Humphries as ‘miraculous’.

“An incisive and wonderfully melodic songwriter, brilliant pianist and an engaging interpreter of song, John is an absolute jem.” Joe Stilgoe

“Poetry for the planet” Nikki Brazil

Spring Awakening

This wonderful musical is set in late 19th century Germany and it is a coming of age, rock musical about teenagers discovering their inner and outer sexuality. A huge hit show when it made its Broadway debut in 2006 it has lost none of its power or story telling ability over time.

Winner of many Tony awards and industry titles, the musical explores sexual and emotional themes from the 1890’s that are still relevant to the present day. HBO has recently released a Spring Awakening documentary chronicling the 15 year reunion of the original broadway production team with the cast telling how even now, it has still affected their lives.

With classic tracks and a hard, sometimes challenging story line this is a Fringe show to savour.

The 25th Annual Putnam Spelling Bee

A group of eclectic preteens (played by just as eclectic adults) learn that winning (and losing) isn’t everything at their local spelling bee.

Shy Olive brings her best friend – a dictionary; hyperallergic William has his trusty “magic foot”; former spelling champion Chip is struggling with the complications of puberty; easily distracted Leaf is just happy to be included; overachiever Marcy is disappointed by her consistent effortless success; and politically aware Logainne only wants to impress her dads.

The ‘kids’ are accompanied through the bee by Rona – child-spelling-champion turned star real-estate agent with a love for drama, Panch – the begrudged, short-tempered word pronouncer with a crush on Rona, and Mitch – the resident bad-boy serving his community service as a ’comfort counsellor’ at the bee.

With a vibrant score by William Finn (Falsettos) and a wildly funny, Tony Award winning book by Rachel Sheinkin, this bee is one unforgettable experience.

Spelling Bee requires three audience participants per show to take part in the bee – if you feel like trying your hand at spelling a series of (potentially made-up words) sign up in front of house on the day or email happysadpro@gmail.com with your performance date and full name!

HAGGIS, NEEPS AND BURNS

Mentioned by Broadway World as one of their top 10 musicals to see in the Festival this year, Haggis brings the world of Rabbie Burns to life through song, poetry and storytelling. We watch his life unfold from humble beginnings to his numerous and sometimes tragic relationships.

This unaccompanied musical not only gives you Burns favourites pieces but also introduces you to some of his lesser known works. This performance is not just for the newcomer to Burns but also for the connoisseur as it sheds light on his family and social life. When you add in the free Haggis, Neeps and tatties as well as a free drink, you’re well on your way to starting your Festival day in a fantastic way.

This show is packed with brilliant musical numbers and takes the audience on a roller coaster of emotions. There are lots of laugh out loud moments and more than enough tears to really get you. The actors paint this canvas.
